Earth's Magnetosphere

Earth's Magnetosphere
Earth's Magnetosphere

The visualization above shows the magnetic field around Earth—the magnetosphere—as it might look from space. This view is conceptual, but based on real science observations that have been made since the beginning of the Space Age. The orange and blue lines depict the opposite north and south polarity of Earth's field lines.

NPP to understand global change and disasters

NASA plans to launch a new member of its Earth-observing fleet this fall called theNPOESS Preparatory Project. NPP, a minibus-sized satellite, will monitor a broad range of land, ocean, and atmospheric phenomena.

In addition to supporting weather forecasting, NPP will help preserve and extend a suite of long-term measurements critical to understanding climate that began with EOS satellites launched about a decade ago. NPP is also capable of monitoring a broad range of natural and manmade disasters and other types of global change

SUGARCANE Cools surroundings

Sugarcane has been found to cool the surrounding air by over one and a half degrees Fahrenheit, compared to other crops or pasture forage.
.....

It reflects more sunlight and exhales more moisture than other crops, like corn and soybeans, said a study published in Nature Climate Change.

A better monitoring network for greenhouses gases is needed to warn of significant changes and to keep countries that have agreed to cut their emissions honest, scientists said in papers published Monday.

Earth Day -April 22

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment.
Earth Day is becoming one of the most important hallmarks in the world of conservation and recycling. It carries with it powerful connotations of ecological responsibility and taking ownership of our planet; after all, it is the only Earth that we have, and taking steps to lessen the impacts

This year, Earth Day 2011 is being organized around the theme of A Billion Acts of Green®, which encourages individuals, corporations and non-corporate organizations to “live and act sustainably.”

There are all kinds of ways to participate in Earth Day, from local events you can host or attend, to things to do with the whole family, to easy ways to green your Earth Day.

Earth Day Is About Working Together to Safeguard Our Planet

Make everyday an Earthday...! Celebrate it....!

Climate Change can spin the Tectonic Plates

Monsoons spinning the Earth's plates: study

For the first time confirmed that long-term climate change has the potential to spin the Earth’s tectonic plates.

Dr Giampiero Iaffaldano from the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences and colleagues in France and Germany have established a link between the motion of the Indian plate over the past 10 million years and a specific climate change event over the same period: the intensification of the Indian monsoon.
Dr Iaffaldano said that the monsoon, which increased rainfall in northeast Indian by four metres annually, sped up motion in the Indian plate by almost one centimetre per year.

Double Rainbows

When u see a double RAINBOW, what do you call the dark portion between the primary and secondary bows...?

any guess...??

The dark sky between the primary and secondary rainbows is called Alexanders Dark Band.

source:
http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/2011/04/12/double-rainbow-and-alexanders-dark-band/

In a double rainbow, a second arc may be seen above and outside the primary arc, and has the order of its colours reversed (red faces inward toward the other rainbow, in both rainbows). This second rainbow is caused by light reflecting twice inside water droplets. The region between a double rainbow is dark. The reason for this dark band is that, while light below the primary rainbow comes from droplet reflection, and light above the upper (secondary) rainbow also comes from droplet reflection, there is no mechanism for the region between a double rainbow to show any light reflected from water drops, at all.

THE SUN DOES SPECTACULAR DISAPPEARING ACT

THE SUN DOES SPECTACULAR DISAPPEARING ACT

Credit: NASA

On April 2, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured this rare view of the sun. Only twice a year, SDO enters an "eclipse season" when the Earth blocks its otherwise uninterrupted view of our nearest star. For up to 72 minutes a day, an ominous shadow can be seen to obscure the otherwise high-definition view of the solar surface.

Cirrus :Q&A with Eric Jensen, NASA atmospheric scientist

The Mid-latitude Airborne Cirrus Properties Experiment (MACPEX) is an airborne field campaign to investigate cirrus cloud properties and the processes that affect their impact on radiation. The campaign will use the NASA WB-57 aircraft based at Ellington, Texas and start its science flights over Oklahoma on April 1, 2011. Ames project scientist Eric Jensen agreed to answer a few of our questions about the campaign.
